The Garden Burnard Gardens was started in 1986 by Mary & Robert Burnard. Mary wrote the first book about the private gardens of New Zealand entitled Garden Heritage of NZ (pub. 1984). This garden was featured in Mary's second book, The New Garden Heritage of NZ (pub. 1990). It is also shown in Derek Fell's book Great Gardens of New Zealand.
There are eight different garden areas: 1. Herbaceous borders/ Waterlily pond Peak time: mid-November to end-March.
The mirror-image borders have been planted using the colours of the rainbow.

2. Rose Garden Peak time: mid-November to Xmas
This garden features mostly old-fashioned and English roses.

3. Spring Garden Peak time: mid-September to end-October. An avenue of white cherry trees and spring bulbs are the feature in this garden.

4. Woodland Garden Peak time: October to end-November.
Rhododendrons and azaleas flower under tawa and lancewoods.
